All efforts to explain to them the possibility of a laissez-faire government that acts only to defend the rights of individuals from theft, fraud or violence–basically the initiation of force–and allows them to walk away anytime they want to, draws a blank. The mental blank shimmers a moment, then dissolves back into plutocratic fascism for some, and anarchistic communism for others. That is the closest Europeans are able to get to the ideals embodied in the 1972 Libertarian Party Platform. Even Englishmen struggle to overcome this indoctrination. Since all possible alternatives to national versus international socialism are mentally short-circuited as crimethink, as thoughtcrime or simply wiped out entirely by reality control programming, there isn’t much point to trying to overcome dense strata of brainwashing deposited over millennia that exclude all thought processes liable to call into question altruism as the standard of ethical value. The U.S. managed to survive transatlantic waves of collectivist brainwashing, amplified and rebroadcast by Bellamy, Howells, Bryan, Sinclair and London over a century ago, thanks mainly to the critical influence of Mark Twain.
But there has never been a Mark Twain in Europe. Zamyatin dared to question the cult of collectivist unanimity, yet few recall his work.(link) Fewer still recall and understand that the judgment-drowning influence of social pressure pressure was identified and measured in the 1955 Solomon Asch experiments on Opinions and Social Pressure.(link) This monkey-see, monkey-agree tendency to this day shapes the size of committees to magnify their effect in the suppression independent thought.
Fortunately, the literary work of a survivor of the Soviet takeover, penned during the trials and hangings of National Socialist war criminals thirty years later, has reversed the tendency to enshrine aggression as the standard of value and panacea for all ills.(link) In fact, Atlas Shrugged puts forth a Constitutional Amendment able to protect the fractional-reserve banking system from the Crashes and Great Depressions brought on by predatory prohibition laws engendered by pseudoscience and self-deception:

National socialists in America prefer to be addressed by the more polite euphemism “conservative.” As protective self-deception and to explain away the easily-understood fact that the prohibition of trade and production–even of alcohol and plant products–necessarily cripples the economy, they’ve invented the “business cycle.”(link)
By closing their eyes, believing firmly, and clicking their footwear together, mystical conservatives are able to “explain” that the market crashes preceding recessions during the Republican administrations of 1907, 1920, 1929, 1971, 1987 and 2008 were pure coincidence. The troughs of the business cycle sine wave simply coincided with their initiation of force to suppress some trade and production out of bad luck.
The framers of this fantasy are careful to use “GDP” instead of “GNP” for Gross National Product. Why? Because the man who coined the expression “Gross National Product” was economic statistician Clark Warburton, author of “The Economic Results of Prohibition.” That book demonstrated that the money invested in the illegal liquor, wine and beer markets amounted to 5% of the entire U.S. economy in 1932.
