The Pure Food Law passed in 1906, three years after the Silent Panic brought on by a Chinese boycott of American products. The boycott–three years after the Boxer Rebellion failed to exclude foreign morphine and needles from prohibitionist China–got the attention of U.S. industrialists and bankers and the mixed-economy politicians they owned and controlled. British baby syrup had Poison, Morphine written on the labels, and that made them comparatively honest and straightforward by Chinese standards. The Pure Food law only became enforceable in 1907, the Year of the Panic. This was the year of a Great Awakening in China, as Draconian measures were afoot in a War on Poppies. 

Theodore Roosevelt’s inherited fortune and guilt came from American participation in selling opium in China. Once promoted by assassination to the Presidency, the former Police Commissioner who had served the Comstockers and Anti-Vice societies as muscle to enforce Sunday closing of New York Saloons set out to put the Teeth into Temperance. Industrial alcohol would be excise-tax-free, provided poison were added to sicken, blind and/or kill any who drink it.

Bureau of Chemistry guru Wiley chose a pharmacopoeia definition of whiskey and wrote a Decision to make it binding.  Countering government chemist Wiley, Attorney‑General Bonaparte differed as to the Revealed definition of “whiskey” and offered his own alternatives: 

The following seem to me appropriate specimen brands or labels for (1) “straight” whisky/whiskey, (2) a mixture of two or more “straight” whiskies, (3) a mixture of “straight” whisky/whiskey and ethyl alcohol, and (4) ethyl alcohol flavored and colored so as to taste, smell, and look like whisky/whiskey.
(1) Semper Idem Whisky/whiskey: A pure, straight whisky/whiskey mellowed by age.
(2) E Pluribus Unum Whisky/whiskey: A blend of pure, straight whiskies with all the merits of each.
(3) Modern Improved Whisky/whiskey: A compound of pure grain distillates, mellow and free from harmful impurities.
(4) Something Better than Whisky/whiskey: An imitation under the pure food law, free from fusel oil and other impurities.  (Other suggestions primly censored as politically unwoke.)

The gauntlet was flung, the challenge accepted, and so began one of many parallel legal battles whose first casualty would be the American banking system and economy.

The current viral pandemic looks a little like the bacteriological war designed by an American communist. The story dates back to the battered, bowed and bloodied Quing Dynasty, a few years before the 1911 revolution.(link) It was written before the Celestials were invaded by Japan, then later degenerated into a socialist dictatorship. The American communist was Jack London, author of Alaskan Wolf and Dog stories of the gold rush days, stories our parents were pleased to see us devour in childhood. London was an admirer of all variants of “the German philosophy” and bore bitter hatred for merciless, remorseless laissez faire. Nothing less than the initiation of deadly force made any sense to that socialist orator and author.

Comrade Jack London revealed to a surprised America that “The Japanese is not an individualist.” This in The Yellow Peril, written back when racial collectivism was completely fashionable–at least among the pukka sahib.(link) Our eugenicist Republican President had opined that American women were duty-bound to reproduce. To think otherwise, according to Theodore Roosevelt, was “race suicide.” (link)  

The Unparalleled Invasion was written shortly after The Yellow Peril. In it “all countries” attack a relatively peaceful China with germ warfare agents. The story was written as sci-fi predicting the distant future year 1976. Jack London was one with the prohibitionist communists urging passage of the income tax, prohibition and proletarian Senate election Amendments. Objectivists may feel a sense of schadenfreude to learn that the author of “Love of Life,” supposedly committed suicide in 1916; his half-brother Louis London was said by police to have shot himself in suicide in January of 1965. Prohibitionist China, defeated in the Opium Wars, ruined financially by the silver drain, wrecked by weaponized Tae-ping christianity, then humiliated anew in the Boxer Rebellion, finally ditched Manchu rule in 1911, as Jackie Chan so visually demonstrated. Opium and morphine from India, France and Scotland sat in the rain, for dock workers were not permitted to touch it. Prices fell, product backed up and warfare, rapine and looting ramped up in the Balkan States as the Taft-Roosevelt coalition sought a Hague agreement to regulate the international dumping of opiates.

Prohibitionism–as fanatical in Methodist America as dry Mohammedanism in the Ottoman Empire–was scaring the bejeesus out of the opium-farming Balkans, Raj, Cochin-china and Afghanistan. Everyone involved in converting that opium into acetylated morphine was also in a cold sweat–only without the cold-turkey prickling. England, France, Austro-Hungary, Germany-Prussia, The Netherlands, Switzerland and (less than before 1907) These United States were becoming anxious about the future. So why not pit one brand of prohibitionism against another in a sort of “Only Cure” economic jiu-jitsu?

It was widely known, thanks to the philosophical outpourings of Mr Dooley of Arrchy Road, that morphine was added to liquor as prices fell. Mystical pseudoscience already regarded alcohol as an addictive narcotic, so the cloak of camouflage was ready-made. The added inducement, now that Mrs Winslow’s Soothing Syrup no longer put crying babies in dreamland had palpable economic and religious benefits. The richest woman in America, addicted since childhood, used ethanol to lessen the discomfort of withdrawal sickness.

INCOME TAX ABSURDITIES  [From the Baltimore Star Rep.]
No matter what may be the Individual attitude toward the income tax as a simple proposition, the section of the new tariff bill which embodies this employment of a war-time measure in the midst of peace is full of absurdities which, it is to be hoped, will be eliminated before the bill reaches the White House.

The requirement that employers shall withhold from employees the proportion of salaries required to be paid as income tax, and thus become responsible for their employees’ compliance with the law, is open to great objection. It infers (implies) that the employee is not himself sufficiently honest or responsible to take care of his own relation to the taxing power, and thus does serious injustice to a large class of salaried people. The man who is capable of earning as a salaried employee more than $4000 a year is usually a man of principle and responsibility, quite as capable of dealing fairly with the Government as the man who draws his income from stocks and bonds or a personal share in a business.

This human necessity of providing for the investigation of questionable returns shows how much of an invasion of private affairs this tax will allow. Its enforcement will be a source of scandal and annoyance and doubtless of much unfairness. It will encourage evasion and subterfuge and the withdrawal of funds from healthy enterprises to take advantage of the special classes of investment which are exempted. In its train will come many evils of a serious nature. It involves a more serious menace to the party assessing it than any other governmental measure in contemplation. ***

SO what was going on in the world as the US government fastened this vampire tax on citizens? 

China–desperate to rid the nation of foreign dumping of poppy sap chemicals–had completely dismantled and replaced its government in 1911, and repercussions fanned outward. Republican President Yuan called the poppy the “all-destroying weed!”  In January of 1912, an election year, Congress overrode President Taft’s veto to make it a federal felony to transport alcoholic beverages into ku-klux-dry territory (as most of the Southern states had enacted prohibition).  Corn Products Refining, flagship of The Glucose Trust–doing for America’s home distillation what the British East India Company did for opium addicts in China–was named in a criminal information in an Illinois district court. A ban on “foreign” alcohol provided protection from competition for corn sugar, the ethanol precursor chemical.

Persia, on signing the Hague Opium Convention, signed with reservations about helping to enforce Chinese opium prohibition. This growing Hague Convention was a direct threat to France, Great Britain, and to the Prussia-Austria-Germany axis refining morphine from opium produced in the Balkans. That entire region was already breaking out in scattered warfare–and a naval arms race between Germany and England gained momentum. Montenegro declared war on the opium-producing Ottoman Empire in the fall, so a global opium war became inevitable. In 1912 an assassin tried to shoot the King of Italy, and another shot and wounded former President Theodore Roosevelt. These things were almost routine.

George Orwell’s father, Richard Walmesley Blair retired to the safety of England after earning promotion to Sub-Deputy Opium Agent, first grade. England had given in to Pressure for the Hague Opium Convention, leaving Germany as the recalcitrant holdout. Germany also manufactured a stimulant, cocaine, which Americans–especially William Jennings Bryan–feared (and Europeans craved) as some sort of sex drug liable to drive down the price of coffee. German pharmaceutical companies were dismayed when–by British suggestion–cocaine was bundled into the Hague Convention as though it had anything in common with opium. Italy pressed for and got the inclusion of Indian hemp drugs. Hemp would only be effectively banned in These States after the legalization of heavily taxed beer and liquor failed to generate enough revenue to satiate the greed of politicians.

Such was the atmosphere as Woodrow Wilson–like T.R. a friend of prohibitionism, also opposed to “private and selfish purposes”–became President. Congress prepared to implement another income tax lifted straight out of the Communist Manifesto of 1848 in anticipation of a global opium war it then knew to be inevitable and imminent.

Soon Democrats in high places got NASA and the Global Historical Climatology Network to alter all tamper-susceptible data and depict the past as cooler and the present, hotter–error bars be damned. Genuine scientists familiar with math and physics proceeded to expose the fraud using historical records and the disconnect between satellite and tampered data. Unfortunately for the Dems, Hell hath no fury like a voter duped by smarmy looters the likes of Sturmbannfuehrer Gavin Schmidt.

Voters had to choose between helping the Dems defraud the scientific method in support of collectivist totalitarianism or supporting rights already assured women under the 14th Amendment, Supreme Court jurisprudence and the Libertarian platform. So voters chose to endorse coathanger abortions, nationalsocialist xenophobia and superstitious witch-burning, why? Because the Dems were absolutely determined to continue to weaken Second Amendment gun rights and usher in cradle-to-early-grave East-German coercive economic planning.

The Democratic platform on abortion was just fine as a public health measure to sane people okay with vaccinations. But the faith-based fanatics G. Waffen Bush put to suckling government handouts with Executive Order 13199 of January 29, 2001, aren’t sane. Throwing women’s rights under the bus guaranteed their fanatical support in the GOP Crusade against Kristallnacht gun-grabbing and econazi industrial obstructionism–the only things Republicans got right. If the Dems hadn’t demanded those violations of individual rights, they would have instilled no fear in the voting public. A Legalize-it plank instead would have gotten them elected.

Dems in their platform agreed with the Republicans to let militarized police keep seizing assets and shooting teenagers over enjoyable shrubbery, and to bomb civilians a planet-diameter away from American Samoa. To teevee-watching voters, the choice was between christianofascist totalitarian looters and communist totalitarian looters. The Democratic party lost for being greedy communist dupes every bit as dishonest and incompetent as the Republicans. The same choice was offered in Germany in 1933 and 1937.

Back then, after the Bert Hoover asset-forfeiture Depression, American voters repudiated God’s Own Prohibitionists and elected Democrats five consecutive elections.

Subsidized Classroom Elisions

opium06jan1857When the First Opium War became inevitable in 1837, the good ship Orwell was plying the routes between China and Australia. British capital invested was drained out of the United States and poured into the preparations for the Opium War which overrode China’s prohibition against the dumping of narcotics at her ports.

Unequal treaties, signed at gunpoint, banned local cultivation and left China at the mercy of dope exports from India managed by FDR’s grandpa Warren Delano, among others. Converts to Christianity were meanwhile waging a civil war against China from within. Missionaries, admitted under the Treaty of Nanking, provided a handy pretext for military action against Chinese passive resistance. One French Catholic missionary was killed in 1856 for telling the Chinese their religion was heathen superstition, and Catholics and Protestants from opium-peddling countries took time out from killing each other to gang up on the Chinese–even as US Minister Townsend Harris was negotiating treaties with the terrified Japanese. News of renewed aggression against China reached United States newspapers on January 6, 1857. Richard Walmesley Blair, whose son Eric would adopt the pen name George Orwell, was born the following day.

The opium wars not only drained capital from These States, but the resulting glut wreaked financial havoc in India, where by May 1857, Europeans and Christian converts were being hacked to bits in those manifestations of popular displeasure referred to as the “mutiny.” By August, financial panic shuddered across America. By September there were runs on New York banks and government revenues were greatly decreased. No mention of the opium wars sparking the mutiny–or the two developments affecting American finances–appear anywhere in British or American accounts masquerading as history. Yet George Orwell’s father’s job title in India was Assistant Sub-Deputy Opium Agent, third grade. He was part of an organization that oversaw a sixth of the revenue needed to subjugate, dominate, control and overpower all of India and Pakistan at the time.

It is simply assumed that the three three things coexisted by the sheerest coincidence. In much the same manner, the Roosevelt Administration’s Pure Food and Drug Law of 1906, which affected whiskey, glucose and drugs beginning in 1907, simply coincided with the wave of prohibitionism shutting down saloons and ice houses that served beer. Likewise the Hoover Administration’s enforcement of prohibition with light beer a felony and tax liens and bank account seizures as the mechanism simply happened–according to what the historians have published these past 87 years–to coincide with the collapse of the banking system and the Great Depression.

That the Roosevelt family fortune arose out of this transportation of opium into China was probably known to TR and to Herbert Hoover. Hoover was present and under fire in China during the Boxer Rebellion, but kept quiet about his political adversary’s grandpa’s misdeeds while pretending to struggle against the morphine trade that had led to World War I. Yet his Moratorium and fanatical persecution of beer as the Avatar of Satanic Possession did more to promote Adolf Hitler to Chancellor than anything else in the world.

Only after the Republican Party’s prohibitionism, crash and depression had kept them out of the White House for two full decades, did Republican propagandists dare to leak the stories of Warren Delano’s involvement in the opium traffic. Eisenhower was elected, the United States declared a Christian nation, and the word “God” inserted into the Pledge of Allegiance, printed on coins and currency and chiseled into the walls of government buildings in Washington DC. Fear of “atheistic” communist congregants nurtured the flourishing of a powerful military industrial complex whose lobbyists–to Ike’s discomfiture–quickly dominated the United States government and ordered us into Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, Brazil, Columbia, Grenada and Panama, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Finally the remake Bush Administration created the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (White House OFBCI) within the Executive Office of the President. The asset-forfeiture fanaticism inevitably resulting from such a move, again crushed the economy into rubble.

With any luck the Libertarian Party will replace God’s Own Prohibitionists, and These States and a Post-Brexit Pepperland will resume their colorful careers.
