Communist anarchists hyphenated and rebranded as soi-disant “anarcho-libertarians” or Ancapistanis confuse taking a limit (useful math) with dividing by zero (mathematical fallacy). That sort of democratic laissez-faire is precisely what anarchists do NOT want. Anarchists loudly insist that ALL government is an evil poison, and that no tiny amount of it is safe. In this, as usual, they are joined by eugenicists, nationalsocialists and prohibitionists–all of them division-by-zero fanatics who reject the virtue of voluntary temperance.(link)

Back when communist anarchism was popular among the clueless, prohibitionism was also on the march.(link) The two factions collaborated to increase coercion via the 16th, 17th and 18th Amendments–with almost no spoiler votes and hardly anyone elected.(link) Just as anarchists want no laws against murder, prohibitionists (like their communist pals) want murderous laws against trade and production, especially of things like freedom, beer and plant leaves.

Republicans finally endorsed prohibitionism in their 1928 platform and lost the next five elections. 

The people through the method provided by the Constitution have written the Eighteenth Amendment into the Constitution. The Republican Party pledges itself and its nominees to the observance and vigorous enforcement of this provision of the Constitution.

Real life had another surprise in store for prohibitionists, who say ALL enjoyable drugs are poison, and ANY poison kills and therefore ALL must be banned for your safety by men brandishing loaded service pistols. Prohibition made it a felony for drinking water to contain over half a percent of alcohol. That’s 0.6 fluid ounces per gallon. Understand that drinking two gallons of pure water–without the shotglass of Everclear–means a 50% chance of death from shock. We know this because people died in water drinking contests during Prohibition, their electrolytes that severely imbalanced.(link)

Even assuming there were something bad about laissez-faire government, as nations move toward it (that is, away from communo-fascist socialism), life expectancy increases along with per-capita Gross National Product. So as is the case for beer, magic mushrooms, hemp, LSD, and any number of maligned items, the initial effect at least is beneficial

The Evening Day, New London, Connecticut January 1, 1926, page 4, on which an almost new Ford coupe sells for $175, depicts the breakdown of the Gentlemen’s Agreement between prohibition enforcers and a coalition of bootleggers, bankers, sugar & yeast companies and pharmaceutical enterprises. Many of the larger drug companies were at least partly German, at a time when Germany was still a holdout on passing the equivalent of a Volstead Act designed to ban enjoyable drugs. Who is Mabel Willebrandt? She was the Joan Galt of Prohibition who gave the looters exactly what they asked for in the year Ayn Rand was married to a U.S. citizen. Willebrandt had in August and September published “The Inside of Prohibition” as a column syndicated in 21 newspapers across the USA. In it she explained how the income tax was used to arrest drug and alcohol purveyors juries would not convict for prohibition violations. She also ripped the lid off of the Jones 5 and 10 Law (5 yrs on a chain gang and a fine worth 30 pounds of gold for having liquor) passed two days before Hoover swore to fine and imprison the entire U.S. population if that’s what it took to enforce it.

So on our way to page 12 to see if Willebrandt’s column on drug and beer agents with tommy guns will be mentioned or ignored, we see this gem:

G.A. Youngquist… named to succeed Mrs Mabel Walker Willebrandt as Assistant Atorney General in charge of prohibition inforcement, is a close friend of Andrew Volstead and S.B. Kvale, in charge of prohbition in the northwest district.
Youngquist is 44 years old.

So the nation’s top prosecutor resigned, wrote a tell-all that explained how the Administration would topple the economy to exorcise the Demon Beer. Investors saw clearly that the economy would indeed be crushed and money fled banks and brokerages. The elevation of the most ruthless and fanatical Inquisitors, beginning with Younguist, fair-haired boy of the author of the Volstead prohibition law of The Night of January Sixteenth, began.

This was America’s Gestapo directing hordes of agents with holy crosses and service pistols to break in doors, tap phones, audit tax returns, arrest physicians and indict the worlds largest yeast, glucose, sugar and chocolate corporations on felony conspiracy charges. In 1930, as the economy began to freeze and die, Hollywood actresses had withdrawal sickness, dry agents shot people and poisons paralyzed and blinded Americans while religious fanatics swore that shoot-first prohibitionism brings wealth. History shows us that coercion brings poverty, and that the wealth of individuals and nations is a function of the absence of coercion: in other words, freedom.

Yes the British Prime Minister thought American prohibition was a good thing for England. The British were exporting heroin to China until 1911, when the revolution put a stop to that. Soon the heroin-exporting countries went to war to escape ratification of a Hague antiopium convention and grab each others’ markets in Africa and elsewhere. American prohibition, brought on in part by reaction to the drug glut that added morphine to liquor, turned out a bonanza not just for corn sugar and yeast producers, but also purveyors of hemp, barbiturates, beer and moonshine… oh! and heroin. The Canadian province of Ontario tried briefly to coerce people with prohibition, but the resulting gunfights, murders, bribery, fraud, economic instability and corruption promptly brought repeal of that nobly altruistic experiment.

A similar thing occurred in the 1960s. with world population headed for a Malthusian disaster, Republicans and their fanatical remoras sought to keep birth control pills, condoms, diaphragms and such illegal and banned from the government postal monopoly. That effort failed and the second derivative of the population curve changed sign. Canadians in 1968 tried to legalize pregnancy termination. The effort failed but the silence imposed by the Comstock Law of 1873 and its imitations was broken; the little boy shouted that the Pope had no clothes on!

By 1971 the Libertarian party formed, despite Nixon subsidies to the entrenched military-industrial-kleptocracy. The LP platform featured a woman for veep. When Victoria Woodhull tried to run for the top post in 1872 she was immediately arrested by men with guns. But in 1972 the LP got a single electoral vote out of more than 500 cast–in the middle of Supreme Court hearings on Roe v. Wade. To protect their Republican Administration from its own fanatical infiltrators, the justices struck down Dixiecrat coathanger abortion laws under the Amendment that secures rights for “All persons born…” and Canada again rose to the defense of individual rights for women. There are no Comstock or coathanger abortion laws in Canada at all. Canada has a libertarian party complete with law-changing spoiler votes.

The invisible hand of economics is clearly discernible on the Canada’s Atlantic seaboard. Newfoundland, a haven for smugglers like the nearby French Island of St Pierre-Miquelon, still has a dry law on the shelf to keep local smugglers in fighting trim. Once Americans discovered prohibition was a marketing tool for politicians, lawyers, corn sugar and yeast magnates, they came after those perpetrators with blood in their eyes. Now would be a good time to again take political power down a notch, before another faith-addled Republican dismembers the economy for Comstock, Sharia, and Blue laws.

Voting libertarian defeats the worst looter party candidates and tell the survivors to back off on sumptuary laws, asset forfeiture, taxation and interfering with electrical generation and the internet. That’s clout. That’s winning!

Voter Comparison Shopping

When was the last time you saw political party platform planks compared? The entrenched Kleptocracy parties both claimed to be different in 2016. Are they?

The Democrats still want your kids incarcerated for marijuana, only now they want to class it in the same category as methamphetamine and cocaine instead of heroin. The Libertarian Party is against sending men with guns to kick down doors–especially when no harm has been done to merit such violence. The Republican Party wants that Old Testament Prohibitionism that caused most of our financial crashes and economic depressions. Sound farfetched? Exaggerated?

Here is the 2016 straddle plank the Democratic party added to its lengthy platform by the narrowest of margins before choosing a candidate:

The progress made over the last three decades against drug abuse is eroding, whether for cultural reasons or for lack of national leadership. In many jurisdictions, marijuana is virtually legalized despite its illegality under federal law. At the other end of the drug spectrum, heroin use nearly doubled from 2003 to 2013, while deaths from heroin have quadrupled. All this highlights the continuing conflicts and contradictions in public attitudes and public policy toward illegal substances. Congress and a new administration should consider the long- range implications of these trends for public health and safety and prepare to deal with the problematic consequences.

True, the Dems pretend to believe they can repeal the Second Amendment, enact Kristallnacht laws, abolish guns and turn These States into a banana republic or European satrapy. And the GO-Pee platform flatly asserts it wants to change the 14th Amendment so that “All Persons Born” will again be interpreted to mean “All Ova Fertilized,” everywhere, not just in Dixieland as it was before the Libertarian Party electoral vote earned in December of 1972. That vote led to the Roe v. Wade decision recognizing that pregnant women have individual rights in January 1973. (Yep. Libertarian spoiler votes have been vacating bad jurisprudence for 45 years). Their biggest mistake was to cave in to Green Watermelon spoiler votes aimed at making electricity generation more difficult and expensive than it already is. That is the only real difference between the GOP-Tea Party-Klan and the DEM-Green-CPUSA United Fronts.

There is no difference between being flung in jail or shot by conscience-stricken Democrats or lustily bragging Republicans.  Both want hemp users arrested by the violence of law–that, fines and imprisonment are what their platforms offer voters–and visit upon those too young to vote or buy beer. Prohibition laws are marketing tools passed and enforced for a profit that is well-hidden from view. They distort the supply and demand curves to raise prices; that is the purpose of all marketing.

If you are surprised that these precursors to legislation are what make the laws, try not to be surprised by bad translations of legal material in court.  A competent court interpreter can be as valuable as a competent attorney in defense of your rights.

The electoral college had barely confirmed the election of the Hoover-Curtis dry fanaticism slate voted in 1928. There were still over two weeks to go until inauguration day which, back then, was on March 4th.

            Radio newscasters shocked the nation with the story of the Chicago Saint Valentine’s Day massacre in which five gangsters an optician and a mechanic were machine-gunned against a brick wall. The drys fell upon this with whoops of joy and redoubled their lobbying efforts for passage of a draconian enforcement bill introduced a year before by Congressman Gale Hamilton Stalker and Senator Wesley Livsey Jones.[1] What disturbed Chicagoans was the economic reaction; corn dropped 1 & 1/8 cents, and bank stocks likewise fell. All 7,000 saloons, speakeasies and beer flats in the city were immediately shut down, which effectively dried up a major source of income for that convention city. The dry autocracy sprang into action and Congress was besieged with heated demands that something be done immediately to enforce prohibition. Senator Glass, as always, resumed his railing against stock market gambling.[2]

Ferrari’s City Trust depositors, by now sick and tired of obfuscation, organized to demand what New York State feared most: answers.

Investigation of narcotics trial Judge Winslow now went to a House committee, and ailing Hollywood star Alma Rubens was humiliatingly exposed as a morphine addict. As icing on the cake, one John Sergi was arrested for the 14th time and charged with running a mail-order business in heroin.[3] All these stories broke Thursday, February 17, but none were as important as the other white powder connection.

Knowledge of the Opium Wars invariably comes as a surprise to most victims of pre-Internet government schooling. But just before Victoria was crowned Queen of England, China banned opium trading and ordered the traders to leave. Lord Palmerston soon oversaw military operations to force China to repeal its opium prohibition. The war preparations sucked British investment capital out of These States and a depression set in shortly after 1837, when prohibitionist policies in China first affected British commerce.** Modern weapons crushed all resistance and the Chinese were forced not only to legalize the only really addictive drug warranting the nomenclature, but also to pay for the losses suffered by their attackers. This rankled. The Boxer Rebellion was a failed rematch, but the Revolution of 1911 finally restored control of their ports to the Chinese, and the ban produced a huge opium glut affecting the economies of the producing nations–The Balkans.

That almost all the opium containing 12 to 14% morphine is produced between Italy and Turkey is an inconvenient fact handily omitted from government school curricula. Serbia, Montenegro–the entire mountainous area from Slovenia to Bulgaria down to Greece was shot through with opium plots feeding chemical plants in Austria-Hungary and Germany. There, the morphine was extracted and acetylated into patented German Heroin™. Immediately after it became clear Chinese customs agents could no longer be bribed or bullied, price-cutting and competition for dope markets exploded into war in the Balkans, and escalated smoothly into World War I. This too is a surprise to people educated in government-subsidized classrooms, but the mechanism was obvious in the year 1923, when a heroin epidemic in United States called into question the wisdom of the government’s classification of light beer as a felony narcotic per the 18th Amendment. But alcohol prohibition in America was a windfall for the German drug industry. According to The Norwalk Hour:

This country has been a dumping ground for the large quantity of drugs manufactured abroad since the end of the war. And it is against this production of drugs abroad for illicit sale in this country that a movement has now been launched.
Germany, previous to the outbreak of the war, was the chief alkaloid manufacturing country in the world. The supply of morphine, heroin and other alkaloids of opium for the Occident came largely from her factories. In 1915 and thereafter the Allied countries found themselves short of opiates, the medical treatment of hundreds of thousands of wounded having drained surplus stocks the world over. Manufacturing laboratories sprang up. At this time poppy growing in India, Persia and China increased tremendously, and in India it receives governmental encouragement.

There you have a historical recitation of These States suddenly discovering how the Chinese had felt since long before the Civil War.  The parallels with the situation endured by the Celestial Empire continue, for Britain, after losing America, transformed India into an opium farm with an annual output worth $19 million in gold. That entrenched drug market brought England and France (which ran opium regies in Cochin-China) into war with Germany. The war necessitated loan-taking in the USA, whose President Coolidge insisted on October 5 that the loans be repaid. Hence, again, the transfer of British liability to the vanquished, this time Germany. Germany’s reaction was to evade reparations payment by inflating its currency into worthlessness.

Why is this relevant? The prohibitionist infiltrators that caused the Gee-Oh-Pee to try and fail to keep light beer a felony in 1932 never relinquished their hold on the party. During the Reagan-Bush years, when South America was exporting relatively harmless and nonaddictive cocaine to These States and Europe, a flurry of drug testing laws and the exhuming of Herbert Hoover Administration asset-forfeiture legislation triggered a major crash once traders perceived the Depression was inevitable. Like Germany in 1923, Brazil went into hyperinflation, and its president was deposed by impeachment (much like the September, 2016). George Waffen Bush repeated this Herbert Hoover in his second term. Bush’s Executive Orders packed the government with religious fanatics. Together they pushed prohibitionist asset forfeiture of billions, again causing damage to the US and global economies in the trillions of dollars.  Today’s Republican platform reads like Mein Kampf, only with “drug” search-and-replacing “jew” and “America” replacing “Germany” throughout. Both the Republican and Democratic parties disguise the fact that prohibitionist fanaticism by banning beer attracted opiates during prohibition. Prohibition enforcement, caused the Crash and Depression, and Herb Hoover’s policies supported the rise of National Socialism. This led to more war, and finally major Crashes in 1987, and just recently in 2007.

I vote Libertarian secure in the knowledge that there is nothing the other looter party could do that is worse than Republican economic disasters. Furthermore, my LP spoiler vote has 6 to 36 times the law-repealing clout of a vote wasted on the Kleptocracy.

** The Sydney Morning Herald of May 15, 1837 p. 3 contains the unlinkable article labeled CHINA. Click HERE to go to that page and see the Edict expelling all the foreign opium traders from Canton at the lower right. There is no date, but it is likely the thing was issued December, 1836, when the US economy was already in free fall and covetous of Mexican gold in California. The first news in English took six months to find publication in the newspapers. We’ll be blogging on that shortly.
