Freak Brothers Cartoonist

Source of political and economic facts of life in Haight-Ashbury and Austin Texas

My generation had this older brother, a cartoonist who went to the University of Texas at Austin. In comics he ended up an instructor in economics, law and the inner workings of government. Gilbert Shelton created the Freak Brothers and Wonder Warthog.

Video cartoons of his characters have begun to appear. (link)

One of Shelton’s most useful observations is how in Europe the traffic lights are behind or beside your car when you stop at an intersection. The same system is used in Brazil. In the US and Russia, anyone can look straight ahead and see whether the the light is red or green. But in France the driver at the intersection cannot see the light and has to sit and wait for the people behind him–who can see the traffic light off to the side–to start honking to let it be known that the light turned green. I imagine you have to pass a hearing test to get a driver’s license.

Gilbert Shelton was the one source that alerted us to the creation of no-knock warrants. Nowadays you can hardly watch the news without seeing a sanitized report of how some cops First Responders™ with a no-knock warrant for a house across the street break down someone else’s door, murder everyone inside, then hide behind a judge’s gown waving a grant of extraterritoriality qualified immunity and get off scot-free. If this ever happens to you, let your next of kin know that I voted Libertarian.(link)
