ATA, Association of Translation Agencies

After the takeover by freelancers in 1980, once successful passage of a translation test became a requirement for the privilege of voting in association elections or running for office, the ATA de facto became the American Translators Association. Suffrage was also offered to translators of extremely rare languages for which no tests were available, on recommendation of two active members. The primary upshot was that actual translators of verified competence were put in charge of making ATA policy after earning the accreditation of their peers. The disadvantage was that owners of translation agencies could no longer make policy unless they first passed a translation test. Thus began the Golden Age of the American Translators Association, thanks to Ben Teague and Patricia Newman.(link)

Unhorsed translation agency owners made it clear they were discontented, and wanted their unquestioned authority restored. Individuals not competent to pass a written translation test were just as unhappy as people who drop out of college, and for the same reason. These two disgruntled classes were soon exploited by the American Society of Association Executives, which proceeded to retask the bylaws, install its own well-paid Executive to supervise ATA board meetings and make sure that our “elected” officers never receive so much as a penny for their efforts. Regular mail-in ballots used by similar associations were abolished by repeating unsubstantiated assertions, and a “proxy” system was installed so ALL votes are basically handed over to boardmembers. The ASAE also made sure that its own attorneys and soi disant “experts” were consulted on all policy matters. The new order’s big project sought to undermine our translator testing program and burden the ATA with its salaried hirelings. The ASAE itself advertises a staff of 47, not including attorneys–whose particulars are not easy to find.(link)

People unable to pass a simple translation test and too stuck-up to admit the fact, pestered the board members until “peer review” opened a loophole through which passed a flood of people unwilling to sit for a test–including some translation company owners. Agencies were thereby able to regain voting control over the Association as the ASAE tightened its own control over the the board of directors, orchestrating a series of single-candidate “elections.” Members who had earned the right to vote by passing a written test were shocked to discover that it suddenly cost over $350 a year to keep credentials they maintained for $50 during the 1980s. Younger members were pressured to buy tickets to conventions, etc., “or else” lose their credentials through added continuing “education” requirements which, to some of us, were not unlike extortion.

A so-called ASAE expert was paid 55 cents a word to produce an essay recommending that non-members be allowed to take the test. They could then qualify for exploitation by translation companies as certified translators. Almost nobody able to actually translate and vote thought this was a good idea and the motion failed. The extent of decay is such that of ATA members claiming the ability to translate Portuguese, only 1% have passed the tests from and into that language. Wannabees and beginners lacking ability yet inveigled into joining are clearly numerous enough to outvote actual translators who have clearly-demonstrated ability. A board appointed via single-candidate elections and run by a representative of a “Society” that staffs it with multiplying staffers it selects and puts on salary–is anything but a representative democracy.

The ASAE and the translation agencies it represents never let go of the idea of making translation tests serve their own purposes rather than those of translators. Instead of financing their own separate association with an independent testing program, they cling like brood parasites to the existing pool of tested-and-true translators. ASAE/agency plans to debauch the renamed certification testing program into a rubber-stamp handmaid service for agencies backed by an Orwellian managerial corporation is still at the top of a single-minded agenda that does NOT benefit professional translators.

Now they are back. As before, they are selling yet another ill-dissembled attempt to attain that purpose, papered over with insincere assurances and undisclosed “criteria” for packing the membership by adding pliable voters. And no wonder! The current germ lab viral epidemic has crippled the ASAE Executive’s ability to draw income by mandating attendance at conferences. It therefore comes as no surprise that a story was packaged-up with yet another attempt to “restructure” to favor volume and quantity at the expense of ability and quality. If you haven’t seen their pitch paper, write me.

If you believe colleges should hand diplomas to students who flunk exams, then put them on the Board of Regents, you’re what they want. If you believe that discrimination on the grounds of ability is baaad and that a goood rabble in ignorance is what the ASAE and translation companies need to help keep translators in their place, they have found their minion. **

But if you perceive that the ASAE resembles a vampire herding a large mob of potential translators into empowering a minority of middlemen to exert control over the tiny core of actual certified translators that make the association worth having, then reject the puppet board’s latest rewrite of the usual gambit. I will gladly sign a petition to be rid of ASAE control and management and hire and to pay actual tested translators suitable remuneration for their valuable service on the board–once they win a real election with at least two candidates in the running.
–J Henry Phillips, thrice-certified Life member, now in my 33rd year with what was, when I joined it, a genuine translators association worth keeping alive.

Footnote ** “All historical changes finally boil down to the replacement of one ruling class by another. All talk about democracy, liberty, equality, fraternity, all revolutionary movements, all visions of Utopia, or ‘the classless society’, or ‘the Kingdom of Heaven on earth’, are humbug (not necessarily conscious humbug) covering the ambitions of some new class which is elbowing its way into power. The English Puritans, the Jacobins, the Bolsheviks, were in each case simply power seekers using the hopes of the masses in order to win a privileged position for themselves. Power can sometimes be won or maintained without violence, but never without fraud, because it is necessary to make use of the masses, and the masses would not co-operate if they knew that they were simply serving the purposes of a minority. In each great revolutionary struggle the masses are led on by vague dreams of human brotherhood, and then, when the new ruling class is well established in power, they are thrust back into servitude. This is practically the whole of political history, as Burnham sees it.” —George Orwell, Second Thoughts on James Burnham (link)

Dividing Private Property

Franco, caudillo de Dios, Mussolini, Lateran treaties

Fascism is socialism cut with christian altruism. All socialists are fascists today in that none seek to nationalize everything

The four squares on the Nolan Chart are the result of grasping the fact that altruist ideologues seek to destroy freedom by attacking individual rights with a meat cleaver.  Two 2-position switches yield four possible combinations or states for two light bulbs. Looters are horrified at the naked way this representation depicts their darling coercion, so their standard reaction is to claim that clarity is oversimplification and there are no either-or choices in real life.

Not for dim bulbs!

Is this difficult?

Such facile dismissal prompted a rebuttal by replacing the flip switches with dimmer switches. This carries the analogy out to more decimal places without giving up the basic conceptual information either version of the model allows you to visualize. So why four possibilities instead of a flip switch and a single light bulb? or just a horizontal line?

If you start with the premise that life is valuable, therefore aggression is wrong, a bar magnet suffices as illustrative visual aid. Objectivists (link) and libertarians flock like iron filings to the pole labeled Voluntary while altruists (fascists, communists, anarchists, socialists) gather at the end labeled Coercive. Agorists see Voluntary as Right, but altruists regard that pole as Wrong after rejecting the life premise.

Undecided voters with neutralized minds or values are imagined to clump near the center of the horizontal line (hence the centrist label). Christians and Mohammedans view the magnet differently. They flock to the Church pole, and imagine themselves squared off against sinners assembled at the Saloon end.

The Nolan Chart was not designed to delight ethical purists nor attract iron filings, but to illustrate to voters the advantages of consistency. Religious conservatives din voters’ ears with horrible prophesies of Race Suicide (in order to rob pregnant women of individual rights). Contrariwise, socialist orators predict appalling Starvation if a rich speculator is allowed to corner the market on food or energy. So the second axis was added to help voters visualize where inconsistency leads.

Even a concept as simple as Private Property can be attacked by lunatics. Officious mystical conservatives will attach to “Private” evidence of a shameful conspiracy to violate a sex taboo, or to experiment with plant leaves. Their socialist comrades single out “Property” as the baaad word, since it is what likens them to thieves. The truth is that such imbeciles are allowed to vote, so the Nolan Chart accommodates the fact by listing the outcome of unprincipled people armed with the suffrage voting the way altruist zealots urge them to vote.

If there were no coercive zealots urging use of ballots to crush economic freedom, scientific inquiry or consensual adulthood, there would be no need for a Nolan chart. A simple line from Good through Muddled to Bad would suffice. Ignoring muddled fools, however, is the formula for failure in politics. Soviet communism and christian National Socialism are examples of failure in politics–you want more?

Why not delve into what sort of voting caused the 1929 Crash? Prohibition and The Crash–Cause and Effect in 1929 does exactly that, matching newspaper accounts against stock market reactions and competing theories. It is live on Amazon Kindle for the price of a pint.

For every action force…

...curse, when first we practice to coerce!

…there is an equal but opposite reaction force. –Isaac Newton

Since the Republican Party’s Comstock Laws of 1873 crashed the economy while making a chain-gang offense of so much as talking about birth control, mystical Republicans have marveled at the uppity reactions of the women so coerced. Women, you see, had no enforcement of their right to vote in 1873.

Womens’ right to vote was finally enforced by the 19th Amendment, and by 1932 women–especially the Women’s Organization for National Prohibition Repeal–exercised that suffrage to throw Hooverville-generating prohibitionism out of the saddle and into the ditch for five elections in a row. One hundred years after the Comstock Laws banned ALL birth control (including condoms, diaphragms and pamphlets describing the rhythm method), the 1972 Libertarian Party plank:

“We further support the repeal of all laws restricting voluntary birth control or voluntary termination of pregnancies during their first hundred days.”

suddenly became the Supreme Court’s Roe v Wade decision ordering men with guns to start backing away from pregnant women and their doctors:

“(a) For the stage prior to approximately the end of the first trimester, the abortion decision and its effectuation must be left to the medical judgment of the pregnant woman’s attending physician. …”

Republican and Prohibition Party attempts to rewrite the Constitution, bring back Comstock laws, infiltrate the LP.org and force women into involuntary labor have garnered nearly enough votes to threaten the Libertarian Party plank that is Roe v Wade. These coercive pressures engendered an almost Newtonian reaction to the attempted initiation of force. Fully half of U.S. voters in 2016 supported planks to tax, prohibit and hobble energy generation. This is coercion every bit as ignorant, superstitious and drastic as Republican attempts to create new legislation to single out and bully women–calling them selfish. Surprised?

So shall ye reap!

As ye sow…

German voters in 1933 supported planks to tax, deport, disarm, disenfranchise and bully everyone they imagined might be selfish by birth. They too were surprised when bombs rained down–some 15 of which bombs are even NOW being found every day in German soil. Their Christian altruist politicians, officers and leaders were just as surprised when dropping trapdoors tightened nooses about their throats at Nuremberg–in accordance with international law and Newton’s law involving mass and acceleration.

Libertarians cost GOP Popular vote win: Prohibition Repeal Introduced!

The following post GOP Rep Rohrabacher Introduces Bill To End Federal Marijuana Prohibition appeared first on A Libertarian Future at A Libertarian Future – Spreading a Libertarian message across the internet.. When at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. That’s definitely the motto of California Republican Congressman Dana Rohrabacher. Over the past four years…

Suppose they gave a war…

suffrage1909Suppose they gave a war on women’s rights and nobody came? The Republican party is trying to stage the experiment. Their platform shrieks–for 6% of its 36,000-word platform–in carpet-biting rage against pregnant women having the same rights as all other individuals.  Since neither Kleptocracy candidate sees fit to point to its own platform, a few samples from the 2016 GOP platform may illustrate the point.

We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment’s protections apply to children before birth.”

The Amendment guarantees rights for “All Persons born…” not “All Ova fertilized…” To them, that’s a problem.

We will not fund or subsidize healthcare that includes abortion coverage.

population1924

Overpopulation, starvation, war… Malthusian disaster is good?

But they have no problem with licensing, subsidizing and protecting doctors who prostitute the medical profession to give the patina of science to prohibitionist ravings, while pushing the cost of medical care out of everyone’s reach. Birth control is both a survival and a law-and-order issue. Forcing women to carry unwanted pregnancies to completion results in a new crime wave nearly two decades after the prohibition. (link)

Repealing abortion laws entirely, as in Canada, results in a drop in actual crime with victims in a similar timeframe (to say nothing of the connection between overpopulation and starvation). Then there is good old coercive prohibitionist asset forfeiture:

In order to encourage women who face an unplanned pregnancy to choose life, we support legislation that requires financial responsibility for the child be equally borne by both the mother and father upon conception until the child reaches adulthood.

In other words God’s Own Prohibitionists want to use the violence of law to force women to reproduce to suit mystical fanatics. But that’s OK because they also want to force careless men (or underage boys) to pay child support or go to jail, even if neither biological parent wants to become a parent.

moral1901lectureRepublicans have the chutzpah to talk of women fleeing abuse, and friends, there really is such a thing. Women are rallying to the banner of a female candidate not at all interested in coercing them to please coercive brutes. Bookies over at Paddypower are charging 6 to 1 odds of people voting for the Dems, and laying nearly similar odds that The Antichoice will continue to lose as itstopamnesty did in 2000 (but stole the election by vote fraud), 2008, and 2012 mid-terms. The abuse women voters are fleeing is clearly abuse at the hands of ignorant bigots WITHIN THESE STATES, as in 1932. Foreigners are also singled out for abuse, and any cities whose police refuse to join the witchhunt are branded Enemies of the Republican Staat! What kind of party advertises with images of barbed-wire fences for confining humans?

It is true that aside from “letting” women have rights guaranteed by the Constitution and repeatedly upheld by Kleptocracy Courts, the Dems are simply another looter prohibitionist party that wants kids shot or jailed by militarized police over hemp seeds. Both Kleptocracy parties also vow to continue to use asset-forfeiture extortion, treat foreigners like criminals, meddle with deadly force in mystical tribal conflicts on the other side of the planet and use the communist manifesto income tax to further impoverish Americans at gunpoint.

The difference between those two political parties is one of degree, not kind, and is glaringly significant on that one issue. The GO-Pee still have the support of the Wizened Christian Totalitarian Union, but that’s about it as far as women are concerned…

No thanks, “both” Kleptocracy parties. I’ll stick with the LP.org and accept no substitutsky!

Find out how looter party infiltration brought on the Income Tax and Prohibition Amendments that caused the Crash and Great Depression.

cause and effect

Why do refugees flee Statesward? Because the Republican Party’s 1928 Good Neighbor Policy began the exportation of the fanatical prohibitionism that brought on the Crash and left the US economy smoldering in the Great Depression. Prohibition and The Crash–Cause and Effect in 1929, explains how fanatical agents raiding banks in a fractional-reserve monetary structure SHRINK economies here, there and everywhere into black holes of banking panics and liquidity crises.
