Killers with Badges, 1929

First Responder murderers acquitted

Gunfire-riddled auto in which Henry Virkula was murdered by ICE agents in 1929

Henry Virkula was out for a drive with his wife and kids when customs agents leapt out of the bushes and riddled their flivver with buckshot the night of June 8, 1929. This was during Dry Hope Herbert Hoover’s Administration under the Five and Ten law making beer a chain-gang felony 2 days before his Inauguration. Like today, the Methodist Board of Temperance, Prohibition and Other People’s Morals bellowed that the killing was “justified” under the eugenicist tenets of Positive Christianity. Dry Killers was the exact technical term used by citizens and newspapermen alike.

Army of God, just following orders

Christian National Socialists exulted in dry killer antics

First Responders were, as always, justified in murder, according to the experts on what Jesus would have done:

“The second case was that of the De King killing in Aurora, Illinois.  That seemed perfectly horrible until the facts were ascertained and broadcast.  Now the most intelligent people know what happened and see considerable significance in the fact that the grand jury refused to indict the officer involved.  (…) On the Rouse case, the Board said Officer Rouse “killed a rum-runner in the act of committing two felonies,” adding: “The rum-runner had made an assault upon him by the use of poisonous gases produced by a smoke-screen device.  Officer Rouse was completely exonerated by the grand jury.  (…) (LA Examiner 6/17/1929)

Does this sound like a Minnesota cop union mouthpiece waving an “official” medical examiner’s report?(link

There were no throwdown guns, throwdown beer or throwdown medical examiner documendacities or rumors of active warrants to get overeager ambush murderers off the hook. In fact, the International Falls City Council promptly gave notice to Republican President Herbert Hoover on 18JUN1929:

Dear Mr. President: The International Falls City Council voted and passed upon the following resolution:
                “Whereas at an open meeting of business men and city officials of this border city last June 14 an informal appeal to the President was drawn up, asking him to end the terrorism inflicted upon our citizens and neighbors by Federal customs patrolmen, engaged in prohibition enforcement;
                “and whereas, our appeal has remained unanswered, even though the vicious and unlawful conduct of said government agents have continued unabated‑‑except that there has been no fresh murder of our innocent neighbors;
“Therefore, be it resolved that we, the City Council of the City of International Falls, in regular session assembled, do hereby remind the President that the memorialization of the citizens’ appeal was and is the articulate pleading of the community:
“And be it further resolved that the City Council of the City of International Falls does hereby join its official voice in requesting from our President an urgent response to the pleas for help from our people. (Hoover 1929 1974  195)

Senator Millard Tydings of Maryland was at the time compiling a list of prohibition murders, naming names and giving particulars for publication in “Before and After Prohibition,” so politicians encountered tough sledding trying to ignore over a thousand slaughters.(link)

I thought I smelled beer... BLAM BLAM BLAM!

“Send these murderers to the penitentiary” appeared in Congressional debates.(link)

None of this mattered. It was only late in 1929 that statistician Clark Warburton began pointing out that the black market in banned beverages amounted to 5% of the entire U.S. economy, an amount larger than the entire budget of the federal government tasked by the 18th Amendment with killing, confiscating, libeling, padlocking, jailing and murdering every man woman and child in These States if that’s what it would take to force people to drink what the Prohibition Party ordered them to drink.(link) The Prohibition Party averaged 1.4% of the vote in 11 electoral campaigns. There was no Libertarian Party, but there was a Liberal Party demanding repeal.(link)

Libertarian vote growth

Can you say hockey-stick replacement curve?

By January of 1930, no religious fanatics dared debate the Association Against the Prohibition Amendment, armed with Warburton’s exhaustive reports and calculations on consumption of every possible ingredient used in the production of recreational beverages.(link) Women came out for repeal and financial collapse, unemployment, burgeoning prisons, Hoovervilles, riots, blockades, arson, cop-killings, hunger and economic contraction got the voters’ attention.(link)

The Democrats copied the Liberal Party plank demanding repeal of the Prohibition Amendment.(link)  Hoover promptly became a repeal advocate, but Republican National Socialism was into coercive eugenics and helping Hitler to power, and wouldn’t listen.(link) By March 4, 1933, with every bank in the nation already closed down, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was sworn in and the Dems–who had not yet become communists–ruled the roost for 20 years.

Does any of this sound familiar? like it rhymes? Why not compare the short and simple Libertarian Party Platform?

Prohibitionism destroys the banking system

Almost everywhere in the world people sip a cold one in biergartens, backyards, sidewalk cafés–but Wizened Christian Temperance Union Amerika, under laws left over from Andrew Volstead’s Minnesota and the Anti-Saloon League–ain’t one of them places. Fortunately Americans have a choice. You can choose not to vote–people in Australia and Brazil have no such option. You can also choose to vote for Libertarian freedom instead of the mangy, sclerotic soft machines that want men with guns to shoot young people over plant leaves and confiscate their property.

The pro-slavery and protectionist parties that dragged us into a civil war over tariff policies are still in business. Indeed, the Communist Manifesto, written even as they girded for violence, is still a thing to a huge dictatorship that “accidentally” poisons the planet with germ warfare weapons from time to time. The communist party is over 170 years old, and the Dems and GOP even older.

Communist dictatorships collapsed in the 1990s, but were not replaced by libertarian societies. Instead, there was a reversion to superstitious mercantilist mixed economies featuring less chattel slavery and colonial rule, but otherwise fairly authoritarian. The media and academia are so heavily infiltrated that it is impossible today to find a chart showing how the fraction of humanity under communist rule has varied in recent decades. Go ahead, try it, and get back to me if you do.

spoiling for a fight

The number of libertarian voters struggling to replace kleptocracy machine candidates over time is easy to find. Ways are found to keep them out of office, but even that is breaking down under the increase in libertarian voter support. Yet before 1972 there was total hopelessness. War enslaved men into involuntary combat, and prohibitionism brought wars and banking collapses.

Money deposited with banks and brokerages is low-hanging fruit to looter governments. When seized on some pretext, owners of unseized money withdraw it from the fractional-reserve banking system. The economy collapses, communism and looting in general increase, and the media are charged with explaining the whole thing as the result of “too much” freedom or “not enough” coercive regulation–which amounts to the same thing.

After the Nixon Anti-Libertarian Law passed, news media understood that pretending the crashes had nothing to do with hatchet-wielding Treasury, tax and prohibition agents was a lucrative source of cash. And so it is today. Yet every individual can make a huge difference by the simple act of casting a vote for Libertarian freedom and against the senile politicians of the GOP and Dem soft machines.

Populist anarchism, 1894

anarchists ruin the party

You can find the originals at Google News Archives

Two years earlier a communist manifesto People’s Party won 9% of the vote in These States, including 22 electoral votes and almost enough popular votes to THRICE cover the gap between hired and fired parties. That was clout enough to breathe new life into European communo-fascist socialist collectives that multiplied like mice in a monarchy.

Monarchies were on their way out, substituted by democracies in tight correlation with the Fisher-Pry sigmoid curve that maps the rate at which one product or political party replaces another. The graph above is on semi-log axes convenient before cheap computers replaced adding machines and slide rules. When both axes are linear these replacement curves are an S-shape to which newcomers, like cellphones or the Libertarian Party, enter at 0% of market share, accelerate to 50%, then taper up asymptotic to the 100% mark until replaced by something better. Below is how law-changing LP spoiler vote clout is growing now, with no anarchist planks to make us look bad.

So you see that the game is played by gradual replacement that accelerates if the new product offering is better than the competition’s. Just such a hockey stick increase in 1892 caused the entrenched parties to adopt socialist planks so as to not lose the votes they needed to replace each other. Most problems resulted from those socialist and religious fanatic Comstock, prohibition, sumptuary, blue, Sunday, tax and tariff laws containing social engineering agendas. The Libertarian Party is simply reversing that trend by replacing coercion with freedom using the law-changing clout of spoiler votes.

If the kleptocracy could get rid of us by packing our platform committee with anarchists, girl-bullying zealots or child molesters, they’d do it in a heartbeat to keep the bait planks that attract single-issue fanatics. But we’re still here, and still vigilant after 48 years of finally learning to use spoiler votes to play the looters till they repeal the cruelest laws.

To understand how the Liberal Party unseated the economy-destroying Republicans using these tactics in 1931, see Prohibition and The Crash–Cause and Effect in 1929. For the cost of a pint you will understand how cruel fanaticism destroys economies. Live on Amazon Kindle.

Superstition against Science

First there was Mussolini’s Pope, signing Lateran treaties with Il Duce in exchange for religious indoctrination and conditioning in government schools. Then Pacelli was elevated to papal infallibility as Hitler’s Pope. Today, at long last, Herr Gavin Schmidt of the Econazi Internationale has finally managed to secure a Pope of his own, and one evidently predisposed to revive that Holiest of all Inquisitions, no less. That’s progress!

Chamberlin’sThe Bad Popes” may be due for an added chapter soon. The Dark Ages were those centuries in which Europe was dominated by Protestant, Catholic and Mohammedan warfare, torture and superstition. Eight centuries later, James Clerk Maxwell organized Faraday’s and Coulomb’s research into the equations of electrodynamics. This work proceeded even as Britain bombarded China to preserve an outlet for opium grown by Indians, themselves reduced to near-enslavement, and while tax-and-spend advocates of extortionate protective tariffs in These States bombarded, shot, pillaged and burned neighbors whose laziness had made them dependent on the exploitation of chattel slavery.

Science, not suicidal superstition, wins

Science overcame superstition when the derivative was 2.1%–The Pill saved the Planet

Yet here we are, 1867 years after the invention of the Jesus myth and actual ex-scientists, now devote their efforts to the spread of mysticism and superstition. This same ex-scientist seeks, in addition to interfere with the electrical generation that has increased human life expectancy. Earth’s population has grown from two billion–when Christian prohibition enforcers shot beer smugglers in cold blood–to 7.5 billion less than 90 years later–when Christians send men with guns to shoot people for harvesting the “wrong” plants, and to jail doctors for offering a safe alternative to coathanger abortions.

The Catholic papacy fought to have the pill banned, and today its agents control politicians who deny the individual rights of women in backward countries. Pope Francis is the person most responsible every time a woman dies for lack of medical assistance with an unwanted pregnancy. Everything that could forestall a Malthusian catastrophe or make life possible on an overcrowded planet the infallible coot opposes. Still, the Vatican burns electricity like it was going out of style, while Puerto Rico is without power.
